Off on your hols? It's always handy to have a list of things to check off beforehand. With that in mind, Confused.com - in partnership with the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) - has compiled a list of useful things to bear in mind:
Before you go...
* Regardless of how lucky you think you are, don't take the risk - don't travel without adequate insurance! Confused.com compares over 30 providers to bring you a range of policies to suit all needs.
* It's well worth checking out the FCO travel advice pages for the country you're visiting. You can also register with their LOCATE service which will provide you with alerts in case there's any kind of crisis in the area you're travelling to.
* Find out where your nearest embassy will be. Check their website to find out what services they offer and their opening times.
* If you're travelling in the EU then why not sign up for the European Health Insurance Card. It's free, and can get you state-provided medical services in participating countries. Though useful, this should not be treated as a substitute for comprehensive travel insurance.
* Make sure you've got correct visas for the country you're visiting and that your passport is well in date. For more information, read our handy travel checklist.
* Scan or photocopy your passport and other important documents. Keep these separate from the originals when you travel in case they're lost or stolen. You might consider stashing them online using a secure data storage site.
* Make sure you have enough money for your trip, plus a little extra in case of an emergency. Having a credit card you can use in emergencies may also prove to be a life saver.
* If you're concerned about your luggage going walkies, you might want to consider looking into TRACE ME Luggage Tracker, which increase the chances of your lost luggage being returned safely.
Whilst away...
* Common sense really, but don't take risks that you wouldn't at home!
* A good traveller will treat their host country with respect. To this end, find out about local customs and dress, behave accordingly and obey local laws... There may be serious penalties for breaking a law that might seem trivial at home.
* Check whether it's safe to drink local tap water. If not, stick to bottled water and avoid salads, non-peeling fruit and ice in drinks.
* Make a note of all useful numbers, such as the local embassy and police station. Always keep your travel insurance helpline number handy too.
* If you do need to claim on your travel insurance whilst away, have your policy booklet to hand. This will contain useful information and guidance on what you should do in certain situations.
* For more tips, read out article on other things to keep in mind while you're away.
