Going on a Off-road trip needs good preparation and will differ from your normal preparation. This is why you will want to know how to plan an off-road trip. Here are some hints and tips below.

Planning your route is the first and most important thing to do. Even if it's gong to be off-road, this doesn't mean that you will just wander around and see where it takes you. You will want to euip yourself with a good GPS device and good maps of the area that your are visiting. Should any trouble arise this will help to see your position on your map and find your way to nearest road or human settlement.

I would recommend that you travel with another vehicle. This can be of tremendous help if you remain stranded, and needless to say, you won't be all by yourself - which in any situation of life or death is recommended.

Of course, things don't need to go wrong, but you should be prepared. This means that you should take with you enough supplies for the number of days you plan to be off road plus two. Water is also vital. Again, the same rule applies - take enough water to last your for the number of days you'll be on road plus two. As a rule, you should have with you at least 2 liters of water per person per day.

Carrying a first aid kit will prove to be invaluable. Cuts can easily get infected without a band aid and some antiseptic, and a first aid kits comes with that and more, so pack a first aid kit. If you are under any medication, be sure to pack it along as well, and have some for a few extra days, just in case.

The next thing you will want to do will be to make sure that your sturdy and reliable 4x4 is ready for the action. Needles to say, you will want to have a spare tyre of equal size, and the tools you will need to replace it, so pack a basic tool kit as well.

Vehicle recovery items like Hi-lift jack, tow straps, tree saver, come-along, D-rings, shackles, shovel, chainsaw and bar oil, 2 cycle engine oil, spare chain (can be handy in recover situations, as well as for trail clearing on wooded trails), winch kit (tree strap, hi-lift jack, snatch block, pickle fork, shackle, gloves), and snow tire chains (if the tires can't do the trick) should also be taken along, so make sure you have room for those as well.

Communication devices is one of the most important things. Besides a GPS you should have a mobile phone with good reception, or if you go off grid, a satellite phone, and even a radio and walkie-talkie.

You will be well prepared for most off-road situations if you follow the above hints and tips. Of course, the items that you take with you can vary from road-trip to road trip, but the above can be seen as some basics that you should never forget to take along.
