Finding an appropriate nursing home can be a real challenge. There are all sorts of conflicting pressures to do with cost, location and facilities you may need. If you need extra care which may be additional to the services normally provided by the care home this will drive the price up. Of course, you also need to make sure that the services are actually provided by the care home you have selected!

Nursing homes come in a variety of formats in the US. There are a number of different providers who can help you find a suitable home. There are a certain number of state funded, or at least state assisted projects which will allow you to find a home that is appropriate for your needs. These schemes are available more for those who are from low income backgrounds and have few assets which can be used to ensure they are taken care of.

Medicare.gov is the official site which deals with these sorts of issues. They have facilities to compare the nursing homes available to people using state assistance to make sure they receive the care they need. Medicare.gov has a list of nursing homes which can be searched on by location. This should be your first stop to compare the relative benefits of nursing homes in your area as they are graded on fairly stringent criteria. These include, but not exclusively, fire safety inspections, quality of care standards and staffing capabilities. They also provide a checklist to assist you with your decision if you are unfamiliar with the process and don't know what exactly it is you are looking for. It also contains information on paying for facilities and alternatives to nursing home care.

Medicaid may be able to help you with finding a nursing home. If you have Medicaid help and will be using it to fund a nursing home, they will have an approved list for your area, or will be able to help you pick a nursing home which you are both covered for and is sufficient for your needs.

Finding a nursing can also be facilitated by your medical insurance company, if your policy covers assisted living. A large number of people in the USA are either not insured, or under insured for the medical needs they will have. You should ensure that you have the necessary insurance to start with, and if that isn't possible, you should see what your policy will cover. If you are covered by insurance, the insurance company will usually have preselected nursing homes. An example is BUPA, who have 'BUPA approved care homes' which they have judged fit for their clients. Many insurance companies will run schemes like this to ensure that standards are met. That isn't to say that you shouldn't still be discerning; if in the process of finding a care home through an insurance company you come across one you are not entirely happy with, then tell you insurers. They will probably want to know anyway so they can provide the best possible service.

If you are unable to get any help, and will be paying for the service yourself then internet searches and talking to contacts who have something to do with nursing homes is important. Visit as many as possible to find the best deal and services. Most nursing homes will be advertised, especially as many are privately owned businesses in the USA. Don't be afraid to ask questions. If you are really stuck, then a local hospital may be able to help point you in the right direction.
